Trend or Fad?

Lesson Goals:

1. Differentiate a fad and a trend
2. Explain how trends and fads come about.

Article

Guide Questions:
What is the problem of the maiden?
What products did she use to achieve her goal?
Was she successful in her agenda?
Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a maiden who must not be named. The maiden loved a solitary life, spending her time in the company of her garden, livestock, and kitchen. Despite being alone, she was blessed always to have an abundant harvest and numerous livestock. Without anyone to share her blessings with, she made into meals all she had harvested.

Years of doing this made the maiden very fat, to the point of being obese. Now unable to tend to her garden and livestock because she cannot work anymore like she used to, the maiden resorted to watching television and surfing the internet for weight-loss methods. Television shopping prescribed belts that melt fat, abs-crunchers, and the like, while the internet informed her of the existence of slimming pills that guarantee results in just one week.

Desiring to be back to the way she used to look, the maiden bought all that was mentioned, while still maintaining her regular food intake. A month later, she did not lose weight – worse, she gained more.

The maiden felt helpless and hopeless, until a runner passed by her house. The maiden spilled to the runner all her troubles and worries, and the runner left only one piece of advice: “Have a proper diet and do regular exercises. That is all you need.”

Enlivened with what the runner told her, the maiden started having a proper diet ad regular exercise. A month after, there was a gradual difference in how she looked like and how she felt about herself and her body. She continued doing what was advised.

Viewpoint Discussion

Enjoy the following discussion with your teacher.

Discussion A

• Why did the maiden choose to use slimming pills, fat-burner belts, and abs-crunchers?
• Do you also use products that are crazed by a lot of people?
• Are those products still the talk of the town or nation until now?

Discussion B

• How did the maiden find out about the slimming products?
• If the people did not react on the emergence of such products, do you think the maiden would know about it?

Reading and Writing Activity: Developinga Paragraph Using Definition

A definition identifies a term and sets it apart from all other terms that may be related to it. Generally, it begins by citing the general class to which the term belongs. What follows are the particulars to differentiate the term from the other members of that class providing clear details to support the term's definition. For example, if you were to define "whale", you might start by saying it is an aquatic mammal. Then you could talk about its size, shape, varieties, environment, breeding habits, and so on.

Below are some common methods of definition:
1. By characteristics or features
2. By function
3. By what it is not
4. By what it is similar to
5. By example
6. By its origins.
7. By its effect

Examples:

1. Item2. Category3. Features
A forsythiais a flowering shrubwith yellow bell-shaped blossoms.
Herbivoresare animalswhich feed on plants.
Changeis a type of processwhich involves passing from one state or phase to another.

Sample paragraph 1
What are longitudinal dunes?

Longitudinal dunes are long low ridges of sand that lie approximately at right angles to the trend of the sand waves, or parallel to the direction of the wind. Some of the ridges are almost straight; others are slightly wavy. They range up to about 10 metres in height and 30 metres in width. Many are more than one and one-half kilometres long. Both sides of these dunes have practically the same slope and are usually covered with grass and shrubs. While the crest is usually bare of vegetation, on some dunes, even the crest is covered. Where this occurs, it means that wind action has stopped on this particular dune.

Sample paragraph 2
What is meant by protein quality?

The term protein quality refers to the ratio of essential amino acids (eaa) in a protein in comparison with the ratio required by the body. A high quality protein contains eaa in a ratio that matches human requirements. A protein which is lacking or low in one or more eaa is termed a low quality protein. The eaa which is in the shortest supply is called the ‘limiting’ amino acid. In general, animal proteins tend to be high quality while vegetable proteins tend to be low quality. The exception is soy protein which is quite high quality.

Sample paragraph 3
What is cholera?

Cholera is an intestinal infection that can be described according to its cause, symptoms, and treatment. Cholera is caused by a bacterium, called Vibrio cholera. Contaminated food, water, or faeces can result in the rapid spread of this disease. Patients who have been exposed to the disease may exhibit mild to extreme symptoms. The primary signs are watery diarrhoea and loss of water and salts. Other symptoms include clammy skin, wrinkled hands and feet, sunken eyes and a dry mouth. If the severe diarrhoea is not treated, it can be life-threatening because of dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Possible treatments for cholera can include oral or intravenous replacement of fluids and salts as well as certain antibiotics. Prompt and appropriate treatment appears to significantly reduce the mortality rate and suffering.

ZipGrade: My Own Scantron

Since I had difficulties in checking exams because of the number of the students that I have, I'm so grateful to one of my students who introduced me this. According to her, this app saved them lots of time in checking their surveys and sorting out how many answered A, B, C, D, and E.
So first, I created an account in Zipgrade. Then, I created customized answer sheets for different exams.
This is an example of a 50-item answer sheet. The only available answer sheets in Zipgrade are 20, 50, and 100 items. To create your own answer sheet, go to their website, then look for customize answer sheet. And when linking it to the quiz you have made, you need to select the correct answer sheet used.
This is an example of an answered worksheet ready for checking. To check the paper, go to the zipgrade app installed in your smartphone. Scan the paper by putting the 4 black squares under the scanning phone, then wait until it checks the paper.
This is how a checked paper looks like. Very time saving app! One more thing, the result will be uploaded in the teacher's database.

What's Your Learning Style?

I got lots of C's and this is so true... thanks for this info. Now I know how to learn better.
